Centre for Architecture, Urbanism, and Global Heritage(CAUGH)@York: Research Centre Launch

Welcome to the Centre Launch & Research Workshop focusing on "Architectural & Urban Heritage" in York.


Coordinated by The Centre for Architecture, Urbanism, and Global Heritage (CAUGH), the event aims to revive the legacy of architectural and urban heritage research at the University of York. The programme will foster debates and discussions on the role of architecture and urban heritage research at York to link our researchers with academic departments, research teams, stakeholders and collaborators in practice, policy and technology to build partnerships, shared interests and innovative projects within Yorkshire and beyond.


The programme is organised around three Thematic Sessions and a Roundtable, with speakers from industry, policy and academia to bring multiple voices, perspectives and history to inform our journey into the future.

The Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage (CAUGH) focuses on the investigation of human aspects of architecture, spatial practices, urban heritage, material culture and the built environment within the ever-changing urban and social structures of contemporary cities. At CAUGH, we approach design as a comprehensive and inclusive process that takes account of the influence and impact of human actors, either as individuals, groups, or communities, on the shaping of architecture, urban design and the preservation and development of heritage sites.

Architecture@York: Collaborative Research Workshops

Following the establishment of York School of Architecture in Sep 2023, we are excited to launch our research programme and the Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage at the University of York. Building on the long legacy of architecture, urban, culture and built environment research at York, the Architecture@York Workshop Series will bring together researchers, scholars, partners and stakeholders to work collaboratively on innovative projects, programmes and exchanges for public good to tackle key societal challenges,, locally, regionally and globally. It will position YSA at the heart of an innovative, collaborative and supportive research environment at York, providing an active venue for discussions, debates, projects and exchange. 


In the first Architecture@York Series (2024-25), we plan three collaborative workshops, led by one of our research groups: Architectural and Urban Heritage (Nov 24); Community Architecture (Feb 25); and Environmental Sustainability(May 25). 


York School of Architecture

Established in Sep 2023, The School is the new home for architecture, urban and built environment research at York, with an ambition to be a Centre of Excellence in social responsibility and creative innovation in a community-led, evidence-based and internationally excellent research environment. 


Our mission is to engage with communities and stakeholders to better understand developmental and environmental challenges as well offering novel methodologies, approaches and solutions. Having established our PGR Programme and our UG course starting in Sep 2025, our research vision is diverse and inclusive and centred around co-creation and co-production.
